Four levels and the compass
The video as text

The same activity does not suit everyone.

An activity that is too hard frustrates, a childish activity hurts, and an energizing activity during restlessness only adds to it.

The activities in the booklet are organized by cognitive level (what can the person do today?) and by alertness (read the moment).

Four levels, four personas.

Level 1, mild, like Sarah: understands full sentences, takes initiative, chooses and plans. 49 activities.

Level 2, moderate, like Rachel: chooses between 2 options, does one step at a time. 53 activities.

Level 3, moderate–severe, on the move, like Miriam: on the move most of the time, busy hands. 46 activities.

Level 4, severe to very severe, without words, like Leah, and also at the bedside: responds mainly to touch, sound, smell and the surroundings. 36 activities.

How alert are they now? Sleepy or apathetic: an energizing activity. Alert and calm: a balancing activity. Restless: a calming activity.

The compass: What fits right now? 1 · Who? Level 3, like Miriam. 2 · How are they now? Restless. If restless, first check for pain, toilet needs, hunger, thirst, heat or cold, and noise. 3 · With whom? One-on-one.

The compass suggests The Towel Cart, Picking Mint Leaves and Free Coloring in Big Strokes. The Towel Cart is a calming one-on-one activity. Its page has: Goal, How to run it, What you need, How to show it, and Note.

Three questions, and an activity that fits right now.

Made to Measure: an activity booklet for staff and families.

About the author

Hasan Awida, occupational therapist and gerontologist. The booklet grew out of daily work with people living with dementia, with their care teams and with their families.

Why I wrote this booklet

“What can we do with him?” I have heard this question hundreds of times. From a caregiver in the middle of a shift, with twenty residents on the ward and only two hands. From a daughter who drove an hour to visit, sat beside her father in silence and went home with a heavy heart. From a nurse who wanted to help and didn’t know where to start.

The knowledge exists, in research, in books and in courses. But it doesn’t always reach the moment itself: the person working in a draining, overloaded environment with no room to think, or the family who wants to give quality time and doesn’t know how.

That is why I wrote this booklet: to make what I have learned over the years accessible, in plain language and on a single page, to whoever is beside the person right now. Open it, choose, begin.

I wrote it for caregivers, so the work becomes lighter and more meaningful. For families, so a visit can become real time together. For our profession, so leisure is seen as part of care, not as passing the time. And above all, for the people themselves: so that, even with dementia, they have days full of quality of life, dignity and joy.

Behind every diagnosis there is a whole person, and every person deserves a day that means something.

Hasan
